Burger Battlin’

After having numerous heated debates with my BF about where does the best burger in Newcastle (food is legit all we ever get aggressive about…) I really can’t decide which is my fave!

I tried to rank them in number order… But it was soooooo close (I know, I know, I shouldn’t be so obsessed over food…) I couldn’t; they were all very similar in price so there’s no real margin for a comparison there either! So I’m just gonna have to give my few very favourites their own little star rating on each aspect, such as: impressiveness (size, appearance… Woah, shit that’s a big burger… basically) taste, and of course, atmosphere of the venue.

Let’s start with the place best known for its burgers about town…

Fat Hippo:

Every time I go here the place is buzzing. It’s in a quirky little underground restaurant which is always alive with the chatter of hungry punters. You wait at the bottom of the stairs to be seated and you get the usual service, drink/food orders from are taken and brought to the table (I’ve always had fab customer service here and the food comes to the table not long after you order!)  IMPRESSIVENESS: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

TASTE: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

ATMOSPHERE: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Because I’ve been so many times, I know what I like. So I always go for ‘The Fat Hippo’ burger in this picture, it’s my fave. Don’t try and be a hero and get the dirty fries like I did as well… Unless you have two stomachs… Coz man that’s a huge meal! Now these burgers come a little pink so if you’re not into that, don’t go. But the taste was amazing (it’s the fat hippo sauce) and the sheer size is crazy.

Take a look at their Menu!

Next somewhere you wouldn’t expect to get an unreal burger, but it was so good it deserves a spot next to the fat hippo…

Jamie’s Italian:

Now this wouldn’t have been my first choice if I was after a burger, until now. I really love it here, there’s a lovely feel to the place and a very high standard of service.

So, naturally for one of my birthday meals last year (I like to have a birthday week, why not right?!) I went to Jamie’s (if you’re a gold card member you get a free bottle of prosecco and a birthday brownie, unreal) and decided to go for something different; I’d heard good things about Jamie’s Burger so went for it! And was not disappointed!

 I mean, look at it?!

TASTE: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (I didn’t realise till now I actually think this was better than fat hippo… Oh god)

ATMOSPHERE: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Check out their Menu and sign up to their gold card for free! They always have fab gifts each month and little tasters each time you go!

Now a world famous burger place…

Okay so when we heard Byrons was coming to Newcastle, we were super excited.

But I have to be honest, it didn’t blow me away at first as expected… However, this could have been because it had only just opened when we went so I would more than happily try it again (there’s a lil hint for the BF when he reads this…haha) the service was lovely still but when we went it was early afternoon so it was rather quiet, I’d like to go back for the evening; when I walk past it looks like it has a great atmosphere now!

In fairness it was really nice (if a little smaller than I’m used to!) the brioche bun was a lush and I had fried courgettes instead of chips which was a great touch.

TASTE: ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I will definitely go back and give an update on how I find it now it’s gotten into the swing of things! But in the meantime why not check out their Menu for yourself and maybe let me know?

(This one is a bit of a cheat as its not technically a burger but it’s just as good as!)

More of a brisket sandwich than a burger but I felt it needed an honourary mention! It’s a delicious little bite and has the exact fundamentals of a perfect rustic burger, a beautiful brioche bun and an delicious meaty middle.

TASTE: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

You can find a link to their menu in my Best Breakfast post!

The next place is a genuine firm favourite tbh, it’s a staple answer for me whenever anyone asks me where to get a nice quick burger…

Handmade Burger Co:

An obvious choice really, the burgers are lovely and there is always plenty of choice! From having a chicken burger to having a burger with peanut butter on it! So if you’re into trying new exciting flavours get yourself down.

Another thing, the portion sizes are huge! Always share your chips as you get a portion big enough for two. This one was a pulled pork creation with a beef burger and coleslaw. (I’m still obsessed with pulled pork… I have to try not to have it everywhere.) I do like this chain however, the atmosphere varies massively on the time of day. Like many places. So I’d go later on if your prefer more of a buzz.

Check out their delicious Menu!

Last but not least…

Burger Stop:

A lovely little place down by the quayside for a yummy burger and the best sweet potato fries! There’s not much more to say! It’s a cute quirky little restaurant with lovely staff and speedy service. Pop down and take a look for yourself.

Take a look at them on Facebook!

Like I said it was hard to decide on my favourite so here’s a few you guys can chose from and find your own! (Although I feel like it may have been Jamie’s looking at them now…)

With Love,

Naomi x

  1. I love The Fat Hippo! One of my favourites. I’ll have to try Burger Stop. I’ve always walked passed Byrons (to go to the Fat Hippo…) but never tried there either! Such yummy looking suggestions.
